The Incubator project at the Science and Technology Campus in Sesto Fiorentino was conceived to foster the development of new enterprises in the field of advanced technologies, establishing a strong connection with university research.

The complex is organized into four functional blocks—an incubator, heavy laboratories, and two centers of excellence—designed to encourage proximity and connectivity, thus facilitating communication and the transfer of knowledge between academia and industry.

Arranged symmetrically along a north-south axis, the four volumes are inserted into a semi-open urban block, breaking with the traditional closed-block model prescribed by the urban masterplan. This choice reflects the contemporary urban condition, suspended between open and closed spaces, and emphasizes the relationship with the new Via Perfetti Ricasoli, a major urban thoroughfare.

The architecture draws inspiration from the technical and industrial culture of polytechnic institutes, revealing the internal structure and distinguishing it from the outer shell. The interrupted section of the building curtain and the variation in the constructive rhythm express a constructive rationality open to deformation and variation—mirroring the dynamic and imaginative nature of scientific research.

The project reveals the internal mechanisms of the architectural organism, balancing lightness and mass, order and variation. The Incubator thus becomes an open and stimulating place, capable of promoting innovation and dialogue between enterprise and academia—embodying an architecture that is functional, symbolic, and enduring.
