The Biomedical Chemical Hub in San Rocco, developed for the University of Ferrara, is an urban and functional redevelopment project located on the site of the former Sant’Anna Hospital.

The complex includes the construction of two new university buildings – one dedicated to teaching, accommodating around 1,800 students, and the other to research laboratories – as well as a multi-story parking facility, all designed to integrate harmoniously with the surrounding historic fabric.

The architecture is defined by a linear and contemporary language, featuring pigmented concrete façades that echo the traditional colors of Ferrara, large glazed surfaces, and shading systems that optimize natural light and indoor comfort. The second building, with its pigmented concrete pillars, takes on a sculptural quality that engages with its context, while the parking structure echoes the colonnades, colors, and heights of the other buildings to ensure formal coherence.

The project emphasizes environmental sustainability, dedicating over 50% of the area to pedestrian and cycling paths, new plazas, and tree-lined green spaces, promoting soft mobility and user well-being. Accessibility is fully ensured across all buildings, with routes and services suitable for people with reduced mobility.

The Biomedical Chemical Hub thus stands as a project that combines innovation, respect for history, and environmental sensitivity, offering the University of Ferrara a new center of excellence for education and research in the chemical and biomedical fields.
