The new Residence for Security Measures (R.E.M.S.) of Tuscany in Volterra represents an innovative model of facility dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of individuals under psychiatric security measures.

The project moves away from traditional hospital and prison-like architecture, instead proposing a true “house of hospitality” that integrates safety and therapy within a domestic and human environment, promoting autonomy, privacy, and social relationships.

The complex is organized like a small village, composed of several residential units overlooking the landscape and gently integrated into the slope, with a green-roofed base building that appears to extend the hill above. The housing units are designed as individual homes, open to the outside to ensure transparency and visual continuity with the city of Volterra, thereby reinforcing both the symbolic and real connection between residents and the community.

Indoor and outdoor spaces are arranged to create a therapeutic path that guides residents from more public to more private areas, featuring gardens, vegetable plots, and zones for physical activity and social interaction. The use of natural materials – such as wood and terracotta – and the abundant presence of natural light help create a warm and reassuring atmosphere, supporting both psychological and physical well-being as well as social inclusion.

Security, ensured by advanced technological systems and discreet supervision, is combined with an approach based on “soft power” and human connection. The REMS in Volterra is thus conceived as a center for care and rehabilitation, capable of overcoming the coercive models of the past and offering its residents a future rooted in dignity, autonomy, and social reintegration.
