The Library of the Rizzi University Campus in Udine establishes itself as a new cultural and urban landmark for the University of Udine.

The project envisions the library as both an institutional and social gathering place, with a large stepped plaza opening onto the campus and monumental portals that welcome students and visitors into a bright and permeable space.

The building, spanning three levels and approximately 6,000 sqm, is organized around a full-height central hall—the multifunctional heart of the project—capable of hosting study activities, conferences, and events for up to 300 people. Surrounding this core are consultation rooms, study areas, an auditorium, bookshop, and exhibition spaces, while three green courtyards filter the transition between inside and outside, enhancing the connection to the landscape and environmental quality.

The library is designed as an accessible and sustainable hub: high-performance materials, advanced energy systems, and the quality of the building envelope have earned it CasaClima certification, ensuring comfort, efficiency, and inclusivity. Attention to accessibility is reflected in both the outdoor pathways and interior features, making the building fully usable by everyone.

The project highlights the library’s public function, designing it as a space open to both the city and the campus—fostering social interaction and cultural growth. The large book hall, visible from the entrance, symbolically represents the stronghold of knowledge, while the flexibility of the interior spaces responds to the needs of a dynamic and ever-evolving academic community.
