The redevelopment project of Piazza dell’Isolotto in Florence was born from the idea of restoring the public space to a central role in daily life and in shaping the collective identity of the neighborhood.

The project transforms the square into a “continuous carpet,” a unified pattern that embraces and enhances differences, making each variation part of a shared and symbolic design – where every individual can recognize themselves as part of a community.

A key element is the large reflective canopy, which acts as a catalyst for relationships and activities, returning to users the image of the community itself. This intervention invites people to walk through, cross, and pause in the space, encouraging social interaction, soft mobility, and sharing, in line with a contemporary vision of the city as a place for encounter and exchange.

The renewed square, historically home to the Isolotto market, is conceived as a sequence of open and accessible spaces, capable of hosting events, markets, and moments of everyday life. The open space thus becomes an opportunity to weave relationships between buildings, people, and activities, reinforcing the sense of belonging and the quality of urban life.

Awarded the Premio Architettura Toscana in the “Urban Spaces” category, Piazza dell’Isolotto stands as an example of urban regeneration attentive to sustainability, historical identity, and the civic dimension of public space – restoring centrality and value to one of the city’s symbolic places.
