The new Livorno Hospital, designed on the former Pirelli site, represents an innovative city-hospital model—conceived not as an isolated facility but as an integral part of the urban fabric.

The project stands out for its openness and permeability: the internal hospital street, services accessible to the public, and a strong relationship with the surrounding urban context and the regenerated Pertini Park all contribute to creating a new piece of city, going beyond the traditional concept of a walled-off healthcare campus.

The building is compact yet articulated at its edges to reduce visual impact, and it blends into the landscape through green roofs, terraces, and therapeutic gardens that support both care and wellbeing. Pertini Park is restored and expanded, providing new green areas and improved environmental quality for both patients and the wider community.

Sustainability plays a key role in the design: the hospital uses renewable energy sources, recycled materials, and rainwater collection systems, while encouraging soft mobility.
Interior spaces are organized for maximum efficiency and flexibility, with clear circulation routes, distinct functional areas, and a design approach that places the wellbeing of patients, staff, and visitors at the center—guided by universal design principles.

With nearly 90,000 sqm of surface area, 488 beds (344 of which are high-care, with 40% in single rooms), the new Livorno Hospital positions itself as a cutting-edge healthcare facility—designed to meet the present and future needs of the city, while honoring the site’s memory and offering a welcoming, efficient, and sustainable environment.
