The Church of Santa Maria Santissima Madre di Dio in Calenzano is born from the poetic inspiration of the Virgin’s veil, translated into architecture through soft, welcoming forms.

An olive tree, planted at the entrance, evokes peace and a connection with nature, reinforcing the symbolic value of the building.

The concave façade – an iconic element of the complex – gently curves inward to invite the faithful and welcome them into a space that recalls maternal grace. This architectural gesture is echoed inside, where the outline of a dome lightly rests over the main hall, enveloping visitors in an atmosphere of contemplation and spirituality.

The entire complex is unified by a continuous gesture that links all its parts, while features such as the broad churchyard, the curved façade, the segmented dome, and the soaring bell tower are designed to be recognizable from multiple directions, guiding the faithful visually and symbolically toward the church.

Both exterior and interior design choices are driven by a desire to express warmth and feminine grace. Smaller details – such as openings, passageways, courtyards, and volumetric shifts – draw inspiration from the scale and character of historic Calenzano, creating a sense of continuity with the surrounding urban context. The light color of the surfaces, enhanced by the warm tones of the frames and shutters, conveys a sense of purity and serenity.

The church thus presents itself as a luminous, spacious place – minimal in furnishings yet rich in meaning – able to welcome the community and offer a space for gathering, prayer, and peace, in harmony with both tradition and the Calenzano landscape.
